Released in 1967, Franklin's song came during a boiling point of the civil rights and feminist movements, and both movements adopted the rendition to help underline their message and demands.

When she was asked about the boldness of the movements and how she felt about them using her lyrics, she answered, "I don't think it's bold at all. I think it's quite natural that we all want respect — and should get it."
