In April of 1968, King was staying in room 306 at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, where he was shot dead when he stepped out onto his balcony. Four days later, Coretta Scott King, his widow, led a 40,000-person silent march in Memphis in his honor, and 100,000 people showed up to his funeral.
