1. 'Star Trek' Airs First Interracial Kiss
In the episode entitled "Plato's Stepchildren," America got its first interracial kiss on national television. Enterprise Captain James Kirk, a white man played by William Shatner, kissed Lt. Nyota Uhura, a black woman, played by Nichelle Nichols.

NBC wanted to film two different versions of the episode because they feared that stations in the Deep South wouldn't air it, but Shatner kept ruining all the alternative takes, making them stick to just the one episode.
