8. The First Lab Was Called "Ben"
While Labradors were officially recognized by the English Kennel Club in 1903, the first "official" recognized dog appeared in 1899 and was named "Ben of Hyde", or "Ben" for short. He was the first yellow Labrador on record, and most of the yellow Labradors today are his direct descendants. This was an amazing occurrence at the time since all Labs up to that point were black.

The pup was born in the kennels of Major C.J Radclyffe, and quickly became a popular breed.
