29 Things You Didn't Know About Labrador Retrievers, America's Most Popular Dog

7. How They Got Their Name
So how did the Labrador retriever get its name? The dog was famously embraced by both The Earl and Duke of Malmesbury, who loved to take the dog along on hunting trips and shooting sports. The Earl's son began to breed the dogs, and by 1903 Labradors were recognized by the English Kennel Club. Their popularity only grew from there.
