15. They Can Smell Diabetes
Dogs are known for their strong sense of smell and their ability to detect illnesses, but Labs might be a step above the rest. The first dog to detect low blood sugar was a Lab named Armstrong. If not detected, low blood sugar can lead to health complications like seizures and fainting. In 2003, the pup was trained to smell the chemical changes that happen when blood sugar either spikes or crashes. This has led to the training of Diabetic Alert Dogs, which alert their owners before they become symptomatic.
