Catherine Zeta-Jones And Michael Douglas Share The Secret Of Their 18-Year Marriage
The long-term couple is proving that some Hollywood relationships are actually meant to last.
Celebrity relationships are typically as fleeting as the flash of cameras on the red carpet — but Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas are defying the odds and proving that Hollywood miracles do still happen. At the 2019 Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday, the two shared the secret behind their two decades together. "He is my best friend," Zeta-Jones told ET. "He is the kindest man I have ever met in my life...His sense of humor, he is actually quite funny in his show. [I'm] so proud to be with him tonight." Douglas was nominated for his role in Netflix’s The Kominsky Method.
Douglas, 74, confessed in the interview that he knew the two were destined to be together the first time he set eyes on the 49-year-old actress. "The first time I ever met her I found out we had the same birthday, and I told her, 'I'm going to be the father of your children.'"
Zeta-Jones chimed in, "He did. And then he found out that I played golf. I think that was it."
"I found out she played golf," Douglas confirmed. "I melted right there. She looked straight into my eyes, and that was it." Actor Danny Devito introduced them at the Deauville Film Festival in France in December 1999. They married at the Plaza Hotel in New York in November 2000.
Nearly 20 years later, the enamored couple has moved on to the next phase of their lives, which is making up grandparent nicknames. Douglas became a first-time grandfather a little over a year ago with the arrival of Lua Lizzy, the daughter of his son from his first marriage. He and Zeta-Jones are now trying to teach the little one their new names. "I want to be Bubba," Douglas told ET. Zeta-jones added with a smile, "I’m ZeZe."
And when they’re not busy being grandparents or on the big screen, Douglas likes to watch the love of his life tap dance every now and then. "When we first got together, I asked her to tap dance in our bathroom on the tile floor," he told People at the SAG Awards. Zeta-Jones quipped: "That was limited, because the marble got a bit scratched up!" She now has a dance studio in their home, and Douglas enjoys watching her tap away. "I watch her tap dance, anywhere and any place," he said. "I love to."
