The Midwest has never been a densely populated area. And Kansas is about as Midwest "breadbasket" a state as they come. The cornfields have traditionally outnumbered the people.

Kansas is the 15th largest state in square miles, and the 34th in population. It ranked eighth among the top 10 for outbound moves, with 58.9% of moves heading out of state. And it's not like there were so many people there to start. The total population for 2019 was under 3 million.
