So why are people leaving West Virginia? Maybe partly due to pollution like the contaminated mine drainage shown here in the state's wetlands. However, like so many states, economic opportunities may outweigh environmental concerns when it comes to the decision to leave.

West Virginia Metro News reports: "And there is our conundrum.  Businesses are reluctant to come here or expand because of declining population, while one of the reasons for the outward migration is the lack of opportunity." It's definitely a catch 22.
