California is the state I call home — me and almost 40 million others. Sure, it's a big state. It's the third largest in the United States. But, that is still a lot of people. With a population density of 253.7 people per square mile, California ranks No. 11 out of the 50 states in population density.

For many years, the number of people moving into the state far exceeded the number moving out. But things change. In 2018, California broke the top 10 for outbound moves, with 55.4% of moves taking residents out of the state.
