South Dakota has never been densely populated. The 2019 census data shows a population of under 885,000. By comparison, there are at least three cities in California with a higher population than this state.

The Mount Rushmore state ranks No. 17 in size, making its population density 10.7 people per square mile, putting it at No. 46 out of the 50 states.

South Dakota reportedly saw 61.7% of moves taking people out state. For such a sparsely populated state, that's a huge percentage of the population.
