1. The Berlin Wall Came Down
On November 9, 1989, the East Berlin Communist Party announced that East Berliners could finally move freely through the wall for the first time in decades. The whole city showed up to the various checkpoints with champagne, beer, and hammers, and people began to break down the oppressive barrier, marking the beginning of the end of the Cold War.
