6. 1936: Greyhound
In the 1930s, greyhound racing became such a popular pastime that it began to surpass horse-racing as a national sport. People would dress up in their finest outfits, grab dinner and drinks at the tracks, and feel the thrill of betting some of their hard earned money on the dogs. The greyhound itself became a symbol of the art deco period, with his sleek and modern silhouette. Because of all of this, it was quite popular to get one of the compact pups as a pet.
