When you just need to get away from it all for a couple of days, think locally. Often, less than a couple of hours away there's somewhere you could go and enjoy a quick break. It could be to a big city, the ocean, the mountains or a lake.

If you're retired and have the choice, go when fewer people will be there and rooms will be cheaper. In large cities where there are lots of business travelers, the weekends might actually cost less; whereas places like the beach would be less expensive during the week since most guests are vacationers. Going off season might also mean cheaper rates.

Lots of online booking sites offer discounted hotel rates. Compare prices on different sites, and also try contacting hotels directly for last-minute discount opportunities.
