Cats are great companions, especially if kept indoors. They are generally low-maintenance (aside from wanting to be with you all the time and needing grooming) and aren't too difficult to provide care to when you travel, making them ideal pets for people over 50 and looking ahead to retirement.

When you think of cats, you probably think of a tabby, calico, black or white cat — we just called them alley cats growing up — but did you realize there are many, many cat breeds beyond the common domestic shorthairs?

If you are looking for a more exotic cat, here are some other beautiful breeds to consider. They all make great pets, and shelters and rescues are wonderful places to find your new best friend, even if they're not a fancy breed from this list.
